My Friend Flicka
by Mary O’Hara

This book is about a boy named Ken living on a ranch in Wyoming with his older brother, mother and father. Ken loves horses but it seems he can’t do anything right. He loses saddle blankets, breaks reins…And then comes the worst news yet, a report card so bad he has to repeat a grade. Then comes Flicka, a spirited chestnut filly. Ken tames and trains Flicka over the summer and learns the importance of courage, responsibility, and friendship. I like this book because it’s about hoses and because of the way Mary O’Hara makes you feel like a part of the story.
